 Building
                      Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital representation of
                      physical and functional characteristics of a facility (a
                      Digital Twin). Ideally, the BIM model is a shared
                      knowledge resource for information about a facility
                      forming a reliable basis for decisions during its
                      life-cycle accessed, and developed by the various design
                      professionals involved in the facility, contractors,
                      subcontractors and suppliers constructing the facility,
                      and the owners and operators during the life of the
                      facility through to its demolition (or re-purposing).
Building
                      Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital representation of

BIM is an expansive methodology that extends far beyond
                      any single software: 
                      - True BIM is about collaboration and data sharing across
                      the entire project lifecycle. It's a holistic approach to
                      information management that goes beyond individual tools.
                      It's about leveraging technology to enhance collaboration,
                      efficiency, and project outcomes. 
                      - BIM isn't just 3D modeling; it's about data-rich models
                      that inform decision-making. It encompasses aspects like
                      project management, cost estimation, and facility
                      management.
                      - BIM thrives on interoperability. The ability of
                      different software tools to communicate seamlessly is what
                      empowers a BIM project. It's about breaking down silos.
As BIM developes, it has the capability to be an
                      intelligent model-based process that gives architecture,
                      engineering, and construction (AEC) professionals the
                      insight and tools they need to more efficiently plan,
                      design, construct, and manage buildings and
                      infrastructure.

Additional levels of BIM are being considered and are available in some software tools at this time there is only general views on how the dimensions may be standardized:
8D BIM: Safety and/or Risk Analysis
                      8D BIM adds risks, hazard, and/or safety information to
                      the geometric model to improve safety at work and prevent
                      accidents. With 8D BIM it is possible for the safety
                      manager to visualize the construction site before
                      construction, enabling an effective analysis of all
                      possible scenarios to prevent hazards and other issues. 
9D BIM : Waste Management and/or Lean Construction
                      
                      9D BIM, is the dimension of BIM that optimizes and
                      streamlines all the steps involved in the implementation
                      of a project through processes digitization to minimize
                      waste. Lean construction is an approach that enables
                      efficient management of resources and involves monitoring
                      the use of raw materials in order to minimize the
                      incidence of waste. 
10D BIM: Industrialized Construction 
                      10D BIM aims to make the construction sector more
                      productive through the integration of new technologies and
                      physical, commercial, environmental or other type of data
                      to optimize each phase and increased construction quality.
                      Next-generation digital infrastructure offers accurate
                      control at every stage of production of each individual
                      element through advanced, codified and standardized
                      processes.
 
                    
This suite of international standards encompasses concepts and principles (ISO 19650-1), asset delivery phase (ISO 19650-2), asset operational phase (ISO 19650-3), information exchange (ISO 19650-4) and security (ISO 19650-5). Together the documents outline the concepts and principles for information management at a stage of maturity described as 'building information modelling (BIM)' and provides recommendations for a framework to manage information including exchanging, recording, versioning and organizing for all actors. These documents are applicable to the whole life cycle of any built asset, including strategic planning, initial design, engineering, development, documentation and construction, day-to-day operation, maintenance, refurbishment, repair and end-of-life.
